Jules Ramage (1987, France) est artiste-chercheur, intersexe et non-binaire. Diplômé du Fresnoy-studio national des arts contemporains, docteur en Sémiologie du Texte et de l’Image, il est associé au laboratoire CERILAC d’UPCité et membre de la Cité du Genre, institut interdisciplinaire de recherche en études de genre. En 2011, il co-fonde BLACKCUT, plateforme de production dédiée aux pratiques collaboratives, qu’il co-dirige aujourd’hui avec l’artiste Marina Ledrein. Depuis 2013, il poursuit un travail de terrain approfondi dans l’espace carcéral, où il implante des protocoles collectifs de recherche-création. Conscient des limites éthiques et juridiques propres à son terrain et au statut de ses collaborateur-ices, Jules Ramage travaille ainsi dans la logique de l’expanded cinema, en produisant des films mais aussi, lorsque cela est impossible, en activant son contenu d’une toute autre manière.
Il est lauréat du prix Social Practice Arts (2022), soutenu par le CENTQUATRE PARIS et la Fondation Gulbenkian, en duo avec Marina Ledrein. Il a été accueilli en résidence au CENTQUATRE Paris, à la Cité internationale des arts et à Bétonsalon-centre d’art et de recherche. Ses projets ont été présentés en France au Centre Pompidou, à Bétonsalon-Centre d’art et de recherche, à la Cité Internationale des Arts, au CENTQUATRE, au Musée de l’Homme, aux Beaux-Arts de Paris et en festivals internationaux. Plusieurs de ses collaborateur·ices ont aujourd’hui terminé leur peine et continuent à travailler avec lui : en 2024, ils co-fondent Afterwork, groupe de travail réunissant activistes, chercheur·ses en droit et personnes ayant connu l’incarcération, afin de mieux penser la manière dont le droit d’auteur peut influencer les parcours de peine.
Jules Ramage (1987, France) is an artist-researcher, intersex and non-binary. A graduate of Fresnoy-national studio of contemporary arts, he also holds a PhD in Semiology of Text and Image. He is associated with the CERILAC laboratory of Université Paris Cité and a member of Cité du Genre, an interdisciplinary research institute in gender studies. In 2011, he co-founded BLACKCUT, a production platform dedicated to collaborative practices, which he now co-directs with the artist Marina Ledrein. Since 2013, he has continued in-depth field work in the prison space, where he implements collective research-creation protocols. Aware of the ethical and legal limits specific to his field and to the status of his collaborators, Jules Ramage thus works in the logic of expanded cinema, by producing films but also, when this is impossible, by activating its content in a completely different way.
He is the winner of the Social Practice Arts prize (2022), supported by CENTQUATRE PARIS and the Gulbenkian Foundation, in duo with Marina Ledrein. He was an artist-in-residence at CENTQUATRE Paris, Cité internationale des arts and Bétonsalon-art and research center. His work has been presented in France at the Centre Pompidou, Bétonsalon-Centre d’art et de recherche, Cité Internationale des Arts, CENTQUATRE, Musée de l’Homme, Beaux-Arts de Paris and at various international festivals. Several of his collaborators have now completed their sentences and continue to work with him: in 2024, they co-founded Afterwork, a working group bringing together activists, researchers specialized in public law, and people who have experienced incarceration, in order to better think about the way co-authorship contracts can influence sentences and prison trajectories.
